"My first job, after turning 16, was unloading freight cars at local mill. I then worked as a pipe fitter's helper in a large paper mill for 2 summers to pay my way through college, where I played linebacker and tight end. My third year in college, I was a laborer and machine operator in a brass mill. After graduating, I worked as a laborer and machine operator in that brass mill, before becoming a foreman in the mill for the next 2 years.


As a foreman I was responsible for running the entire plant’s operation while assigned to the grave yard shift, including the coordination of a casting operation that melted and processed about 80,000 pounds of brass per hour. I  went on to be assistant plant manager in 3 different mills for the same company. 


I saw first-hand the effects of plant safety, and the dangers associated with hard manual labor, including worker deaths and amputations. I understand what people need to be able to do in jobs requiring hard, heavy manual labor, and how the physical effects of those injuries impact a person’s ability to perform that work. I have insight into how operations work, how people are injured, and the severity of those injuries. Most importantly, I understand how dramatically they affect the lives and futures of those workers and their families physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially."
